Snoring occurs due to a vibration of the soft tissues in the back of the throat. This can occur because someone sleeps with their mouth open. With the mouth open, their tongue falls back near the back of the throat, narrowing the airway. When air is goes into this narrowed airway, the soft tissues in the back of the throat to vibrate.
Over time this may become more serious and develop into obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea can occur when muscle tissues in the mouth and throat are stretched beyond their intended range due to a person constantly sleeping with their mouth open for a long period.
The throat tissues or tongue can completely block the air passage way to the lungs and prevent the person from breathing for a short period of time while asleep. When the person needs to gasp for air, this results in loud snoring. The person may or may not be forced to wake up when this occurs.
Other times snoring can be caused by simply sleeping in a wrong position. When sleeping with the head and neck misaligned, it can also lead to throat tissues vibrating when air enters the passage way.
Whatever the reason is, a person's snoring can often cause a problem for their spouse or partner. Sometimes it can be a more serious sleep problem for spouse rather than for the person doing the snoring. The audible noise can keep the spouse from being able to fall asleep or wake them up in the middle of the night.
For some the snoring can get bad enough that their partner can no longer sleep in the same room at night. Before resorting to this extreme though, there are safe and easy to use solutions which can help reduce or even eliminate snoring.
We reviewed some of them over the next few pages.
