Having an adequate sleep environment is very important to getting a good night's sleep. While the right sleep environment will vary from person to person, here are some key factors to take notice of to determine whether or not your sleeping environment is one of the causes of insomnia for you.
Is your bedroom noisy?
Having a quiet environment is very important for falling asleep and staying asleep. If you have roommates or housemates which stay up much later then you and they cause a lot of noise, then you may have trouble sleeping.
Having a spouse or partner that snores can often cause sleeping problems as well.
Is your bed comfortable?
What people consider to be a comfortable bed will vary. People have different preferences on the degree of softness/hardness of their bed and pillow. No one knows better whether your bed is comfortable or not than you.
Is the temperature comfortable?
The right room temperature for a person will also vary. However feeling too hot or too cold will make it harder to feel asleep.
Is there too much light in the room?
Having a dark enough room is also important for falling asleep.
Are you being interrupted while you sleep?
If you have children that causes you to get up at night or have a partner that snores, then they may be interrupting your sleep.
Do you feel safe sleeping at night?
Those that feel unsafe at night will have trouble sleeping, such as those living in neighborhoods not considered safe or have been recently burglarized. Consider adding extra locks or installing a security system if it will help you sleep sounder at night.
Do you nap too often during the day?
Individuals who take too many naps during the day may find it harder to be able to sleep at night.
